Entitlement, Rage, and Contempt: The Psychodynamics of Narcissism

It looks like Arkansas winter weather has the potential to thwart the upcoming workshop on Narcissism that is scheduled to be held this Friday, January 8, 2010. The inclement weather policy will be decided by Thursday, January 7 at 1:00 pm. If we at NASW Arkansas feel that it is in the best interest and safety of attendees to cancel the workshop, we will call each attendee at the phone number provided. If it is necessary to cancel the workshop, it will be rescheduled for another date. Also, you may call the NASW Arkansas mobile number at 501-993-0328 after 1:00 pm to find out if the workshop has been rescheduled due to inclement weather.

HIV Travel Ban Lifted in US

January 4th marked a critical moment in social change – the official end of the HIV/AIDS related entry, stay and residence restrictions (more commonly known as the “travel ban”) in place since 1987. NASW Social Work Speaks policy statements clearly support the removal of the ban, and views this and related restrictions as discriminatory and limiting a client’s right to care and treatment.

Social workers and allied professions have long viewed the ‘travel ban’ as an affront to individual rights. Everyday experiences of clients range from not being able to re-unite with family, friends, or partners because of that persons’ HIV status to limiting equal access to health and behavioral health care services. The ban also resulted in persons with HIV/AIDS denying they were living with a chronic illness. And for untold thousands, the ban limited their ability to apply for citizenship and work visas.

The lifting of the ‘travel ban’ is a necessary next step in the ongoing efforts to address and stop the stigma and discrimination universally experienced by persons living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Lunchtime Series Webinar: How Leaders Lead: Guiding Principles for Social Workers in Evidence-Driven Environments

(2.0 FREE Ces) — January 26, 2010, 1:00 PM-3:00 PM (ET)

Beginning in January, the NASW Lunchtime Series will launch its eight-part Lunchtime Series Leadership Forum, as well as debut its new webinar format.

How Leaders Lead: Guiding Principles for Social Workers in Evidence-Driven Environments The demands for “evidence” and outcome-driven practices often present tensions for social work leaders who have strong commitments to social justice and equity. Developing leadership practices that can meet rigorous expectations and still remain consistent with core values of the profession in today’s fiscally challenging environments presents unique challenges and opportunities for social workers to demonstrate the strengths and power of their professional training. This teleconference—moderated by Tracy Whitaker, DSW, ACSW, with presenters Darrell Wheeler, PhD, MPH, and Allison Blake, PhD LSW—will discuss the guiding principles for social workers in evidence-driven environments.

Registration for this webinar begins in early January. Other webinars as part of the Lunchtime Series Leadership Forum include:

•Leading Social Change at the International Level – the Role of Social Workers

•Leading Advocacy within Your Workplace

•Managing Competing Demands

Please visit the NASW Lunchtime Series Web page for more information.  More details will be coming soon regarding the entire Lunchtime Series Leadership Forum webinars, as well as how you can participate. The NASW Lunchtime Series is exclusively for NASW members.
